At the National Pantheon, you can visit the tombs of great Portuguese figures, like Vasco da Gama, Luis Vaz de Camões, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Amália Rodrigues and football player Eusébio. The original St. Engrácia Church is the most well known church in Portugal, due to the 350 years it took to be built.  This monument offers privileged views over Alfama and Tagus River.

S. Vicente de Fora Monastery, was originally built in 1147 by our first king and remodeled in the 16th Century. The church has a majestic, austere façade that follows the style known as Mannerism. The Monastery buildings are reached through a magnificent baroque portal. Inside, the entrance is decorated with blue-white 18th century tiles that tell the history of the Monastery, including scenes of Lisbon’s siege in 1147.

Feira da Ladra Market is traditionally dedicated to selling used objects and indescribable bric-a-brac. The market dates back to 1272 and was held in various parts of the city before settling permanently here. Between souvenirs and bargains, you may just find a real treasure.

Alfama is also known for it’s traditional portuguese food restaurants and fado houses, like Sr. Fado or Mesa de Frades, among others. Rua dos Remédios, very close to our Guesthouse, is just the tip of the iceberg of the amazing restaurants and wineries you’ll find in this area. At Santa Apolónia you’ll find, in upcycled warehouses near the river, more trendy and modern restaurants like Bica do Sapato, Delidelux with it’s excellent brunch and Casanova, best pizza in Lisbon. Lux Frágil club is also in Santa Apolónia and you can’t miss the terrace with it’s amazing river view, specially in full moon night!
